Cub Scouts at Long Lake Park (5/17/2007)
We did the Fourth Annual outreach event for Cub Scout Pack
626 at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton this evening.
We had a great volunteer turnout: Carol Marple, Mark Thell,
Todd Carpenter, and Jeff and Alyssa Taylor helped set up the pads,
prep the rockets, fly some demos, and pack up afterwards.
There were about 92 flights by about 60 Cub Scouts, mostly
Generic E2X rockets on A8-3 motors, with an occasional C6 thrown in
for merriment. They were launched in flights of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
or even 6 at a time (the drag races were a way to increase
throughput as the kids wanted to fly rockets a second or even third
time. There were not too many
misfires. There was one and possibly two CATOs (Todd thinks the
motor mount let loose on one of the weird ones.
There was a pretty good breeze out of the south. Many (but
not all_ of the scout's rockets were recovered, but a few of the
MASA demo flights were not. I crashed my Silver Comet (core sample
after the chute didn't get out on a C11), and treed my Acme Spitfire
way out of reach. Carol treed her Fat Boy, also way out of
reach. Alyssa treed another Fat Boy, and both parts of a Venus
Probe, but I think those were recovered with the help of a pole.
Mark flew his champagne class twice on D12s for fun flights, and
between us we also flew an Exoskell, a UFFO, a stomp rocket, and a
skywinder (I think I got them all).
Great fun, and the scouts and their leaders appreciated our
efforts. 16 more kids listed for the NAR Fly 50,000 program
(The rest had flown before).
Next up: Saturday at Jordan Park School is the GISE launch
and at Great Meadow, VA is the TARC Finals. Stay tuned....
