November 1999 launch report (11/20/1999)
A nice day (for November) and a new launch site!
On Saturday, November 20, MASA members turned out for the
inaugural launch at the new flying site near Rogers. A
good-sized, but not huge, group was on hand for many exciting
launches. Temperatures were in the 40's with a light
wind. This launch concluded the MASA flying season for the
year. The next scheduled launch will be in January.
Some Highlights:
The Fergus family had a number of nice flights. An Edmonds
CiCi went up twice for two very nice glides. Their Quest
Totally Tubular made another appearance and another great
flight. However, they also discovered that a 1/2A is a bit too
wimpy for an Estes Nike Arrow. Dave also flew his new
scratchbuilt "Heavy Lifter" on D's for two very nice
flights.
Quite a number of staged flights strove for serious
altitude. Alan Estenson, Mollie Frisvold, and Joe Kimmes all
launched 2-stage Estes Longshots. Later, Mollie also launched
a Custom Sam-X on a C6-0; B6-4 combo. Lee Frisvold flew his
2-stage Fat Boy twice on a D12-0; C6-5 combination for really neat
flights. Mark Thell showed us D to D staging with his Omega.
Larry Schwartz brought out his 2-stage clustered Fat Boy. 4 of
5 C's ignited on the first stage, but by the time the D ignited in
the upper stage, it was on a distinctly ballistic trajectory that
put it on the other side of the neighboring horse farm.
Russ Durkee flew his Cuda R/C BG twice on D7's. The first
flight was a bit dicey due to control problems, but the second
flight was beautiful.
Kerry Hodges brought along several of his vintage rockets.
He flew a Nike-X and an Andromeda both on C6-5's. He swore
that they were going to break, but they didn't!
Joe Kimmes showed everyone a great flight of his Estes Impulse on
twin D12 power. Alan Estenson put in a first flight on his new
Blossom (a stretched V2) on a D12-3. Glen Overby showed
everyone how to do scale sounding rockets with his IQSY Tomahawk on
an E18, Nike Smoke on a D12-5 and Aerobee 300 on a C6-5
John Knoll put in a great flight with his Mercury Atlas.
Unfortunately, his gorgeous NCR X-Wing suffered a terminal recovery
problem after a great boost on a F62. There were many, many
pieces. Sorry, John.
Carl Persson flew his "Humpty Dumbty" (Will he fly or
will he die?) on a C6-3. Carl also left everyone breathless
with the launch of his seven D12 cluster "Saturn
7". It was incredible!
